Festivus for the Rest of Us!

We celebrate many holidays in December: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and possibly a few less known holidays. One such lesser known holiday first showcased on a Seinfeld episode and went from a parody to somewhat of a secular holiday celebrated on December 23rd. Festivus!
Described as "the perfect secular theme for an all-inclusive December gathering", the holiday was a family tradition of Dan O'Keefe, a scriptwriter for Seinfeld. It got incorporated into the 1997 episode called "The Strike" and included a Festivus dinner, a Festivus pole and assorted rituals including the airing of grievances, the feats of strength and designating easy-to-explain situations as Festivus miracles!
In 2010, then US Representative Eric Cantor, held a Festivus fundraiser; in 2012, a Festivus Pole was erected on city property in Deerfield Beach, Florida and in the Wisconsin State Capitol next to religious themed holiday displays, the "I Celebrate Festivus" Facebook page has 18,780 likes and a definition for the term is in the urban dictionary. Festivus appears to be catching on!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza and Happy Holidays to ALL! |

December

December's birthstones are turquoise, zircon and tanzanite. The birth flower is the narcissus. Until December 21, Sagittarius is the zodiac sign and from December 22 on, it's Capricorn.
In addition to Christmas and New Year's Eve, December also celebrates World's Aids Day (December 1st), Hanukkah (first day is December 6th in 2015), Pearl Harbor Day (December 7th), Kwanzaa (starts December 26) and Boxing Day on December 26th.
