It's a Month of Food!

Many foods are celebrated during October. National Greasy Food Day (the 25th), National Pumpkin Day the 26th), American Beer Day (the 27th) , National Soft Taco Day, National Pretzel Month and National Pizza Month to name but a few. But one beverage and two foods shout October like no others: Beer, Pumpkins, and Candy Corn! Let's take a quick look at each:
American Beer: Long prior to Europeans arriving, Native Americans made a corn beer, foreshadowing the oceans of beer to come. The first known brewery opened in what is now Manhattan in 1612. But the modern era of beer started in the 19th century. In 1810, 132 breweries existed but in 1873 that number shot up to 4,131!
Prohibition significantly decreased that number and in 1933, just after Prohibition, just 756 breweries existed. Now, there are about 1,500 US breweries, many catering to the lighter, paler brews preferred by many an American palate.
Pumpkins: Pumpkins are thought to have originated in the old Americas. Early Native Americans roasted pumpkin strips, ate the seeds and used parts of the pumpkin as medicine. Dried pumpkins were often ground into flour. When the pilgrims came along, they made pumpkin beer! Pumpkins are often grown as part of the three sisters: pumpkin, squash and corn because they flourish together.
Many use the big round gourd for jack-o-lanterns, an old symbol of harvest celebrations.
Candy Corn: Popular in the US and Canada, the colors and shape of the candy imitate kernels of corn but they are three times larger. The Wunderle Candy Company came out with these in the late 1800s and called it chicken feed.
About 20 million pounds of the sweet nuggets are sold each year. They contain sugar, corn syrup, carnauba wax and water. Fondant and marshmallows make the texture into a soft bite.

Printer's Corner October

This month's Printer's Corner tale comes from our York, Pennsylvania store owner, Roger Young and the unusual printing order the store received from the local high school swimming team in the winter of 2014. As a surprise for the entire team for their banquet, the senior parents wanted to create a life-size cut out of the team's swimming coach. To accomplish this unique task, the York Postal Connections team first printed a life-size image of the coach then glued it onto cardboard. Since the coach's arms were extended within the image, they had to be printed separately. The team then attached and seamlessly aligned the arms to make a perfect life-size image of the coach.
Once presented at the senior banquet, the entire swim team was beyond surprise to receive such a unique and creative gift. Not only was the York Postal Connections team able to deliver on such a unique printing request, they also strengthened ties within their community with their steadfast commitment to exceptional customer service.

Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie. |

Jim Davis |
The great thing about candy is that it can't be spoiled by the adult world. Candy is innocent. And all Halloween candy pales next to candy corn, if only because candy corn used to appear, like the Great Pumpkin, solely on Halloween. |

I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. |
