Ten Commandments of Business Success

To realize the importance of internal and external customers, consider both in the context of these Ten Commandments of Business Success that can allegedly be traced back to Mahatma Gandhi who supposedly taught them to his law clerks:

  • Customers are the most important people in our business.
  • Customers bring us their needs — it is our job to fill those needs.
  • Customers are not an interruption of work — they are the purpose of it.
  • Customers are part of our business — they are not outsiders.
  • Customers deserve the most courteous and attentive treatment we can give them.
  • Customers are the individuals who make it possible to pay our wages.
  • Customers are not dependent on us — we are dependent on them.
  • Customers are not to argue or match wits with.
  • Customers do us a favor when they call — we do not do them a favor by serving them.
  • Customers are the lifeblood of this and every other business.
This refresher serves to remind us why we are in the business we are in—to serve our valued customers.

Facts about Fall

  • Equinox means equal light. On the first day of autumn, the sun aligns at center between the north and south of the planet making September 22nd equal parts day and night—the fall equinox.
  • The waxy leaves of evergreen trees remain green throughout the winter because they do not freeze.
  • The changing color of the other leaves happens because plants use sunlight to create nutrients and feed themselves which keeps their color green. However, as the days get shorter and emit less sunshine for the plants, they stop producing those nutrients and display different colors.
  • The British call this season ‘autumn’. The usage of both fall and autumn date from around the same period in the 16th century. Prior to that, this season was usually referred to as ‘harvest’.
  • Pumpkins can grow to be more than 1,000 pounds.

It's Harvest Time!

The season of the primary harvest as well as the transitioning of warm to cool weather has dominated autumn's popular themes. Many cultures, including in North America, celebrate autumnal harvest festivals from way back. Two of them are Thanksgiving in the US and Canada as well as the Jewish Sukkot holiday with its roots as a full-moon harvest festival.

The predominant feeling of these and other autumnal celebrations is gratefulness for the fruits of the earth blended with a soft melancholy linked to the coming of harsh weather.
