401k Financing Advantages

In our experience with franchise candidates aged 50 years and older, we see 401Ks becoming an important resource in funding franchises. The benefits over borrowing from banks or other financing sources are many:
  • You pay the principle and interest on the loan back to your retirement fund. Of course, your 401K or IRA takes the risk. But that risk is often the same one that you would take by borrowing since most lenders require a personal guarantee to pay off your loan.
  • Funding via your retirement account does not impact your credit report or score.
  • It is often faster to get the funds via 401K rather than by typical lending processes.
  • There are several credible firms available to assist you in setting up funding via your 401K or IRA. These companies have experience in setting up a government accepted C-Corporation inside your retirement account so there is no tax impact and it passes legal requirements as a non-personally directed investment.
  • Often the investment of the C-Corporation is only one of several funds within your retirement account.

Your C-Corp will cost money to set up and there will be a monthly management fee to the company you select to handle this transaction. The usual cost of this is $4,000 to $5,000 for set up and under $100 per month in management fees. All of these cost are expenses that are tax deductions for your C-Corp.

Facts about Education in the US

US education has made a long, sometimes rocky but generally steady progression in the realm of educating its children. This year some 50+ million elementary and secondary students will be in the classroom. Another 22 million or so will be attending colleges and universities. It may be a good time to reflect a bit on this important slice of life.

  • The first public high school was started in Boston in 1821.
  • At the turn of the 20th century, Americans began to realize that universal public education was a necessary social investment.
  • 86 percent of K-12 students are in public schools.
  • Females make up the majority of college students with 12.5 million attending in the fall of 2013 compared with 9.3 million males.
  • According to the US Census Bureau those degrees pay off. In 2011, those with bachelor degrees or better earned an average of $81,761. Those with GEDs or high school diplomas received an average of $40,634. Average wages for those who didn't make it past ninth grade was $26,545.
  • According to the latest PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) math and science scores, the US scored higher than Greece, Israel, Chile Mexico and Turkey and lower than Finland, Korea, Japan, Canada and Australia. We were about the same as Poland, Austria, the UK, Hungary and Sweden.

Common Schools

In 1837, an effort by Horace Mann (Secretary of Education in Massachusetts), led to the Prussian style of “common schools.” This meant that everyone was entitled to receive the same educational learning content. Massachusetts also passed the first compulsory attendance law in 1852. It wasn’t until 1918 that every state required students to complete at least an elementary school education.

The prolific Mann also introduced age grading in 1848. Prior to being assigned by age to different grades and progressing through them, students ranging in age from 6 to 14, received their learning passively as single groups in one room schoolhouses. This caused safety as well as educational concerns about the children (and the teachers).
